Looking for a durable, portable speaker that you can bring around wherever and whenever you go? JBL’s Flip speakers are great for those who want to have their favorite jams ready in their pockets. JBL Flip 3 has been a best-selling model for quite a long time; people love the compact design, splash-proof body, and good sound quality. So, how does JBL Flip 4 vs Flip 3 compare? Is the new model really an improvement over the famous predecessor?
Design and Durability
Although these two models may look similar at first, there are several notable differences that set them apart. The older model JBL Flip 3 is smaller and lighter. The dimensions are 64 mm x 169 mm x 64 mm, and the weight is 450 grams. As you may have expected, the slimmer housing makes it easier to fit in purses and pockets. It is also more comfortable to grip.
However, note that JBL Flip 3 is ‘only’ splash-proof. It can withstand temporary exposure to rain and splashes without any problem, but make sure that you don’t bring it into the pool. It is not able to endure submersion.
On the other hand, JBL Flip 4 is bigger and heavier. It measures 68 mm x 175 mm x 70 mm, and the weight is 515 grams. The increased size is not really a nice thing, as it will require a more spacious pocket. However, it does look better. It features a stylish geometric-dash design on the logo, and the housing has tightly woven mesh and rubber for enhanced protection. JBL Flip 4 boasts a waterproof rating of IPX7, which means that it can withstand submersion under water for roughly half an hour.

JBL Flip 4 can give you quite an improvement in sound quality. Although JBL Flip 3 does sound good with a frequency response range of 85 Hz – 20 kHz, JBL Flip 4 is simply better. Compared to its successor, JBL Flip 3 is somehow boomier and less accurate. The mids and highs are not as defined.
JBL Flip 4 comes with a frequency response range of 70 Hz – 20 kHz. The extended low-end enables a more relaxed bass line. It also allows the mids and highs above the bass to be a little bit brighter. Overall, you will truly enjoy the enhanced clarity and detail.
Last but not least, the difference between JBL Flip 4 vs Flip 3 is the battery life. Although they each use a 3000mAh battery, JBL Flip 4 apparently uses a more efficient mechanism which allows the device to operate for a longer time. It can run for up to 12 hours, as opposed to the predecessor’s maximum battery life of 10 hours. They both need about 3.5 hours to recharge fully.
