Let’s begin with the design. Actually, these two models share more-or-less the same layout. The each has a 2-inch color LCD screen. Under the screen, there are four buttons on four corners and a center button for selecting, starting, or stopping a track. FiiO X1’s buttons are more spread apart and slimmer. The volume up/down buttons on the side use the same bar button. FiiO X3’s buttons are thicker and feel sturdier, and it has individual volume up and down buttons.

Dimension-wise, FiiO X1 is slimmer and lighter than FiiO X3. Both measure 96 mm tall and 57 mm wide. The X1 has a thickness of 14 mm and weighs 106 grams, whereas the X3 is 16 mm thick with a weight of 135 grams. Both FiiO X1 and FiiO X3 require a memory card for storage. They support memory cards up to 128 GB. Keep in mind that they don’t have any internal memory.

The difference between FiiO X1 vs X3 in terms of features is the ability to act as an external digital-analog converter (DAC). FiiO X1 does not have the ability. FiiO X3 can act as a DAC via the USB interface. So, it is quite handy and versatile; you can use it independently to listen to music, and you can also use it on your laptop to improve the audio quality when gaming or watching a movie.

Furthermore, FiiO X1 supports fewer file formats. The supported lossless file formats are APE, WAV, WMA, ALAC, and FLAC. It does not support DSD/DSF/DFF. On the other hand, FiiO X3 supports all the same lossless file format and also DSD/DSF/DFF.

Last but not least, FiiO X1 only has a single line output, which is shared with the headphone jack. On the other hand, FiiO X3 has a dedicated line output and a digital output.

FiiO X3 has much higher output power than FiiO X1. If you want to use high-impedance headphones, you should choose FiiO X3. It is powerful enough to drive 300-ohm impedance. Headphones with such high impedance generally deliver better sound accuracy and definition.

Nevertheless, although FiiO X3 has a larger battery capacity than FiiO X1, they have similar battery life. They have an average battery life of 11 hours.

In general, FiiO X3 is the best choice. It can produce higher output power and noticeably better sound quality. The ability to act as an external DAC is also very handy. So, there is no need for you to spend more money for a dedicated amp.
