Headphone or Speaker
The market of audio equipment is huge, you can go to an electronic store nearby and find tons of speakers, headphones, earphones, and in different types to fit different applications. Speaker is the standard of a listening tool be it those in your smart device or in a dedicated unit itself. In addition you will also find terms like woofer, subwoofer, and tweeter in which functions are different but overall they are used to deliver the sound file you have into your ears.
For enthusiasts, the option often lands on either speaker or high-quality headphones and the debate about which of them is actually the best will probably last for a very long time. One of the main reasons why speakers are preferred by listeners is due to the nature itself of providing a more realistic illusion of real performers playing their instrument in the room. This is what a speaker is best for and what makes it an irreplaceable option for many of us.
On the other hand, while the clear difference speaker have with headphone is the ability to seal the sound to your ears only, our personal opinion on a headphone is that they are amazing when you need to look into details or listen to a very thin or layered sounds that are difficult or can’t be captured through speakers. They are ideal for monitoring or critical listening and if the sealing turns you off, open planar design can deliver detailed sound while opening your ears for environmental noise.

Choosing Speaker and Headphone
At the end of the day, it is all about taste and preference and there is no one better than the other as it is very subjective. Especially for more casual listeners, we often go with just any gear as long as they sound great to our ears and in most cases they are matching to what you want from an equipment such as bright and clean trebles or punchy and deep bass. The best speaker is the one that fits your application the best.
After deciding what type of sound you like the most, consider where the speaker is used in where mostly divided into loudspeaker and headphone/earphone. Of course we can use speakers anywhere as long as the sound won’t disturb other people or meant to be an entertainment for other people as well but if your environment calls for a quiet situation then a headphone/earphone should be the wiser option to keep your coworker or family from complaining.
About Flip 5 and Charge 3
Both speakers and headphones are sold in a wide range of price so they can be very cheap or cost an arm and leg but, it is also true in most cases the price will tell the audio quality as well because a good speaker needs good components and they are not cheaply made. If you are here then it means a speaker is the most ideal option for your application but, this equipment also needs to be small enough for easy placement or even transporting.
There are compact bookshelf speakers such as the Edifier R1280T Vs R1280DB but if you need something that can be put inside a backpack or transport easily, JBL will have a collection of amazing options for you. We are sure most people, even those who are not currently planning to buy a speaker or similar transducer are familiar with this brand as they are very well-known in the audio equipment market especially for wireless, compact speakers. Price wise, they are pretty competitive as well with good quality products.
When you peek into their catalog, there are several models to choose from and most of them are very affordable but if you plan to spend around $100, two ideal models from JBL will be Flip 5 and Charge 3. Both of them are priced at the same range and what makes them so comparable to each other is the sound quality itself which is not yet the best in the range of Bluetooth speakers but very good for the compact size.
If you have been using or listening to their predecessors, it is reasonable to upgrade into the newer version as they will be an improvement over what we already have. As opposed to Charge 3 which has been around for quite some time, the Flip 5 is relatively new and only grace the market last year while its brother was already hyped since 2016. What makes them a different speaker in our opinion is what the unit is designed for since initially Charge is made for application with a wider audience.
Flip 5 and Charge 3 Design
Now let’s check these speakers from the external part first and starting with the form factor, while Flip 5 and Charge 3 are shaped the same and prominent to many other Bluetooth speakers out there, they have this cylinder form. Both of them have plastic sides on both sides and they can be placed upright or laying down. They also have various fashion options to choose from, such as black or blue, and in a pattern but, the Charge 3 will be bigger about twice as much and heavier.
As you can see, they are also built or covered with the same wire mesh material which gives them the durability and sturdy impression. While they come in tubular shape, these are not 360 degree so you will still experience some directionality if listening to them from a different angle. If you check the Flip 5, the buttons are located at the back of the device embedded on the wire mesh but the power and Bluetooth are on the plastic bar. On the other hand, all buttons of Charge 3 are placed on top of the unit.
Flip 5 and Charge 3 Sound Quality
Moving further, now let’s see the sound quality of Flip 5 and Charge 3 because this is what most important in a speaker and what’s surprising is that both of them are actually quite similar to each other. When listened next to each other side by side in a room, they sound very much the same in the lower volumes but as you push the loudness and drive the speaker more, the difference becomes apparent where the Charge 3 actually has and airy sound.
This speaker sounds roomy and it seems that there are spaces between the instruments unlike the Flip 5 which is tighter and cleaner. They actually have similar highs with the bigger speaker being more prominent in the sub-bass which gives Charge 3 its upper hand on our ears. In addition, probably due to the size, the latter is capable of producing a louder volume as well and still retain its detail even when you bring it outside where its brother gets muddier.
Flip 5 and Charge 3 Features
Moving to the additional features, if you have JBL units before especially the Bluetooth speaker you will be familiar with Connect Plus and this is what Charge 3 is using to pair the unit with similar model to play together in which the new speakers including Flip 5 is using new technology called PartyBoost and unfortunately, they are not backward compatible. However, the new technology does improve the connectivity range of the speakers as it can maintain performance around twice the distance of Connect Plus.
In addition, being made for both indoor and outdoor use, we are glad that JBL still give Flip 5 and Charge 3 the same IPX7 rating which means we don’t have to worry when accidentally knocking them off from a pool side or accidentally spilling water on the unit for they can still maintain the inner component safely. JBL also somehow remove the speakerphone function and the headphone port eliminating these useful addition.
Flip 5 and Charge 3 Battery
The last point we want to mention is their battery life because it is always a concern against any device with rechargeable battery and we do hope the bigger Charge 3 will also hold its juice longer and in this side they are comparable between 4800 and 6000mAh. With moderate application or moderate volume, we can expect the Flip 5 to play continuously for up to 12 hours while the latter should last for another 8 hours or, we can also use their battery to resuscitate a dying phone.
Flip 5 vs Charge 3
These Bluetooth speakers are amazing for the price point as they sound good both indoor and outdoor but also convenient to be transported for portable application. What sets them apart from each other in sound quality is that in clarity Flip 5 is actually better and sounds tighter but the Charge 3 is airy and have better sub-bass. The big brother also has louder volume and more reliable for outdoor listening but the Flip 5 has a more reliable Partyboost pairing technology compared to Charge 3’s Connect Plus.
- Wireless Bluetooth streaming
- 12 hours of playtime
- IPX7 waterproof
- Pair multiple speakers with party boost
- Built-in rechargeable li-ion battery supports up to 20 hours of playtime and charges smartphones and tablets via USB.
- IPX7 waterproof
- Take crystal clear calls from your speaker with the touch of a button thanks to the noise and echo-cancelling speakerphone.

Both of them are good options and you can go well with just any of the two. If cleaner and tight sound is what you prefer then Flip 5 is the best choice while if airy and roomy sound or louder is what you like better then Charge 3 is the ideal option.
