Listening Device

When it comes to music, not only the song and artist that you are often listening to but the listening device will also matter a lot. Regular speakers will be very convenient for home use and in live applications where you need to send the sound to everyone in the room or space. Because the drive is big enough to amplify the sound source, it is ideal to broadcast something. If you don’t need it to be as loud, we can choose the smaller driver or speakers for entertainment.

When it comes to a listening device, what we need to consider first is how loud it should be. Putting the speaker in the room and listening to it in the space is ideal for an entertainment setting like home theater or entertainment room in the house when you have more people who will enjoy the experience but for personal use, a small set of speakers that we can put on the desk will be more than sufficient. Loud is fun but not when it will disturb other people; those in the same house or your neighbors.

Nowadays, people are probably more interested in using something more concealing such as earbuds or headphones because they are just convenient to be used, not only at home but also almost anywhere outdoors. There is a pair of small drivers on your headphone or earbuds so the smaller they get, the smaller as well the sound in general but since they are closer to the ears, it is not an issue. This is what makes them have the upper hand when it comes to ease of use and versatility.

Because the sound coming out from the driver is not audible to the other people next or around you, we can wear them while commuting, at work, or anywhere when you want to enjoy the playlist. It is, however, safe to stay away from wearing something that will block your hearing completely while walking, cycling or using a similar method because it is important to be aware of your surroundings during this activity.

It is not one device that will fit everyone and every occasion but it is best to match them with what you want the experience to be or the application itself. Speakers is great for when you want to enjoy the song with everyone in the space or room such as in a party or gathering while the earbuds and headphones are best used in a situation when you can’t disturb other people such as bothering your roommate during late night movie or gaming as well as for use in public places.

About JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5

If you are here then we assume that this listening device needs to be loud enough for fun or for other people to enjoy at the same time. Speaker is the answer for this type of application but we can also choose by the size or how you will want to use them. Today Bluetooth speakers like Bose Soundlink Micro Vs JBL Clip 3 are very popular because they combine the sound volume of larger drivers but also with convenience from the smaller options.

There are so many other options as well for Bluetooth speakers and you can choose based on budget, favorite brand, sound quality, features, etc. When it comes to Bluetooth speakers, there are several big players in the market and JBL is always one of them. This company is well-known for their compact speakers and if you have been interested to buy similar devices as well, we are sure most are also aware about how many they got in the collection which continuously renewed from time to time.

For those who want to listen to the music with other people in the room or want it to be louder too so it can be still audible even when you are not sitting right next to it, the JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5 are two promising options to consider. These speakers are very similar and if you are familiar with typical Bluetooth speakers, the two will look like most of them as well. They are not the newest from the collection but this is the reason why we can spend less to get the speaker.

Currently there are Charge 5 and Flip 6 which were released just recently so if you want the newest device with the newest technology, we can check those options too. But, for the casual listener and budget shoppers, we do think the JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5 are both good for the price, moreover the upgrade is not as much as the price gap. In comparison however, they are not identical at all so you may like one of the two better.

JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5 Design

Starting from the form factor, as you can see the Flip line is a more compact solution in JBL Bluetooth speakers range because it is about half smaller in comparison to the Charge 4. Side by side you will also notice that the Charge 4 is a bit rounder while the Flip 5 is more streamlined and slim. The fashion and color scheme is the same however with a small JBL logo at the front and a set of buttons for functionalities at the top.

There is a base at the bottom of these speakers so while they look completely round, we can make them sit on their own without support. In addition, the Charge 4 is also almost twice as heavy compared to the Flip 5. From the build quality they are the same IPX7 rated meaning waterproof underwater up to 1 meter and for 30 minutes but not dust proof yet like the Charge 5 with IP67.

JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5 Sound Quality

Moving further, now is for the most important part which is how these JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5 sound because everyone wants to get these speakers for their sound quality. In comparison, spec wise the frequency response is from 80Hz to 20kHz and 84Hz to 20kHz respectively for these speakers. When tested, they are not identical but still similar so if you listen to them side by side, the sound coming from Flip 5 is actually more pleasant with cleaner tones.

We are unsure about how the speaker is improved internally but the audio from Flip 5 is tighter and cleaner in all frequencies while also keeping the detail intact for a wide range of music genres. But, if you are the type who will play the music loudly, in this case we have to say that Charge 4 is indeed very powerful and can be driven at higher volume while still keeping the audio pleasant to listen to.

JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5 Features

Next we want to talk about the features that you can find on JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5 but let us mention what they are not capable of yet which is answering calls. It seems the Charge 4 used to be able to use this feature through the Play button but they removed it so now we can’t answer calls and sadly none of them are working as smart speakers as well to connect with your digital assistant. However, we still have the JBL Connect+ and Partyboost on these speakers respectively.

This is the same feature that lets you connect them with other compatible speakers in the collection but the tech is different so they are not compatible with each other. For example the Charge 5 comes with Partyboost instead of Connect+ which makes it compatible with Flip 5 but not the former iteration.

JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5 Battery Life

Lastly, for how long you can keep the speaker, Charge 4 which has the bigger build volume is better at keeping your playlist to play longer because at moderate volume this battery will last for up to 20 hours meaning it is almost a whole day of usage. On the other hand the Flip 5 is only 12 hours but, when it comes to typical daily applications usually you will only need to charge them once in several days or once a week depending on how long each listening session is.

The JBL Charge 4 and Flip 5 are similar but different and when it comes to sound quality, personally we like the Flip 5 better because the speaker sounds cleaner, tighter, and also detailed yet, it is not as loud as Charge 4. Both are not smart speakers and we can’t use them for answering calls either. If you will be playing the playlist for long hours, the Charge 4’s bulky form factor does store plenty of battery power compared to Flip 5.

There is no bad option here so we should shop based on which seems to fit in your preference the most. We will recommend Flip 5 if you want a simpler and compact speaker but if you want a loud and long lasting option, the Charge 4 is the ideal choice.
