Buying a New Speaker

We love listening to music but to listen to them we need the equipment whether it is a speaker or headphones. Depending on what type of application or how loud you want the sound to be, our choice may differ too. In general the larger the driver the louder the sound as well and this is useful in applications such as live events or at home. But, if you want a more isolating experience, headphones or earbuds will be more convenient.

If you are here then we assume that a speaker is what you are looking for and this type of listening equipment is good if you need it to be as loud as possible. However, not everyone will like the same type of speakers because there are plenty of factors to consider when buying one. It is always best to get the one that matches with the application or where you will be using the equipment as well as what you need from the speaker such as features or connectivity types.

The first concern is probably your audio source because not all of us will play the music from the same player. Some may choose their smartphone, some may like their CD player, or some people may still have their record player. Make sure that the speaker is compatible with the player or has the proper connectivity to work with the source. Sometimes you may need an additional cable too when combining more than one system to work together.

Next is the size because in general the larger the driver or speaker the louder they get as well. It is wise to consider how loud you want them to be and make sure to use it moderately too, especially for the comfort of other people in the house or your neighbors. For speakers made to be used in crowded places or enjoyed with other people, we want them to be pretty loud or you can buy several smaller speakers to fill the room and space.

In addition, there are speakers with additional features too in order to design your audio or improve the user experience. On larger speakers sometimes there are high-pass and low-pass filters to adjust how the audio will come out. On the other hand smaller speakers such as Beats Pill+ Vs Bose Soundlink Mini 2 comes with wireless connectivity meaning we can pair them with almost any Bluetooth capable devices. Depending on the system, some can be connected with more speakers in the lineup too.

About JBL Charge 4 and Harman Kardon Onyx 5

Now if you have decided about what type of speaker to go for, it is time to see what the market has to offer. There are plenty to choose from and if you are the type who will enjoy the music mostly at home or with friends and family, it is best to get something that we can bring easily as well. Pocket speakers may be too small so we should opt for the larger one like typical Bluetooth speakers. They can play loudly but are still fairly compact for indoor and outdoor application.

When it comes to Bluetooth speakers, there are quite a lot of brands to consider but JBL and Harman Kardon are probably what most people are already familiar with for how popular they are. These companies are not similar however because in general JBL is the more mainstream option while HK is on the premium side. Their speakers are some of the best if you want to get good audio quality from fairly compact equipment, depending on which variant you will be choosing.

JBL is extremely popular for their range of Bluetooth speakers but Harman Kardon is probably more well-known for their fixed setup. This brand has sophisticated options such as the SoundSticks but you can find smaller options like Onyx 5 which is also more affordable. From the JBL we have an even compact option like Charge 4 but they are not very similar to each other. These speakers are both compact however compared to those made for fixed setup.

They don’t sound the same as well but pretty comparable and we do think based on the size alone the Onyx 5 is more similar to the Boombox by JBL because they are both large. The Charge 4 will still let you fit it in the backpack but not with Onyx 5 which fits best on top of your table or shelf like a piece of décor. The Onyx 5 seems to have a better soundstage and is more airy but the overall quality are not very much different to each other.

JBL Charge 4 and Harman Kardon Onyx 5 Design

Before getting into what these speakers can offer, let’s check the unit first and here they are very much different from each other. In a glance the Onyx 5 is sophisticated and it looks like some type of handbag with a loop at the top that we can use as a carrying handle too. The speaker is round with a flat bottom and you can find the buttons at the top for accessing the available features but in general it is just playback. This is battery powered and can accept physical cable for audio.

Next is for Charge 4 and this is very compact or almost at the same size like a typical water bottle so we can travel with it. This is both Bluetooth and battery powered which means it is made as travel friendly. The material is great and similarly you can find some playback buttons at the top for controlling the speaker. On the back you can find the charging port including USB out for charging your other device as well as input port for physical connection.

JBL Charge 4 and Harman Kardon Onyx 5 Sound Quality

Now for the most important part, let’s see what the JBL Charge 4 and Harman Kardon Onyx 5 can offer starting from the sound quality first. These speakers are sounding really good and what we think about their overall quality is they are also pretty airy. In comparison, Onyx 5 also sounds bigger probably for the driver size and in addition, the Onyx 5 is featured with both woofer and tweeter in which Charge 4 is only the woofer.

Side by side the most noticeable difference will be on the soundstage because Onyx 5 sounds “big” too and more natural. It is airy with tight bass which is not overpowering at all, making it ideal for almost everyone. The difference is not very much however because Charge 4 sounds great but they are not the same.

JBL Charge 4 and Harman Kardon Onyx 5 Features

Next we want to see the features that you can find on JBL Charge 4 and Harman Kardon Onyx 5 which should add their value and we do like Charge 4 here for what they can offer. First it is a compact speaker with Bluetooth connectivity meaning we can bring it anywhere, even in the pool because this speaker is already IPX7 rated. In addition it comes with JBL Connect+ which allows you to pair this speaker to other Connect+ compatible and play the same song together.

We also love the fact that you can charge smartphones or other devices using the USB power out on this speaker. For the Onyx 5, this speaker is more modest because it doesn’t come with much but Bluetooth connectivity and firmware upgrade. But, it also have the pairing function to play audio with other Onyx 5 speaker.

JBL Charge 4 and Harman Kardon Onyx 5 Convenience

Lastly for convenience, JBL Charge 4 and Harman Kardon Onyx 5 are not made for the same type of user. It is quite difficult to bring Onyx 5 outdoors because it is large and doesn’t fit that easily in your backpack. However, if you only listen to the music at home, we can rely on any of these speakers. Another thing we want to mention is that none of them will work with digital assistants so if you plan on using Google Assistant, Alexa, or Siri, we will need other speakers to consider.

Both JBL Charge 4 and Harman Kardon Onyx 5 are similarly good but they are not the same and not ideal for just anyone. The prominent difference will be on the features because sound wise they are very good with Onyx 5 being slightly better and more detailed on the higher frequency. However, this speaker is big and meant to be used in a fixed setup while Charge 4 is more portable and suitable for different activities.
