Buying a New Speaker
To listen to the recorded sound, you will need a speaker, and this equipment is widely available on almost any smart device today. The speakers vary in size and sound character so that every user can find an ideal option for their application. For example, a speaker for studio purposes will need to be neutral to present the mix, but for most people, the speaker will boost a certain frequency to make it more pleasant to listen to.
When it comes to speakers in general, you will want to know how they sound. It is wise to listen to them at stores or find the sample because not every speaker sounds the same, and not everyone likes the same type of sound. Next, you will also want to find the perfect size for the application. We may don’t have to worry about the size of this speaker for home use, but if you have limited space or will bring the speaker outdoor, we will need to consider the size.
Larger speakers are almost always louder, and if this equipment is for mass use or listened to by more people, we will want something more significant and louder to cover the space. In addition, we also want to consider the connectivity. In modern days most speakers are connected through Bluetooth, especially the compact ones such as Bose Home Speaker 500 Vs Sonos Five. Some of them can use a wired connection through a USB or AUX port, but Bluetooth or Wi-Fi will be the most convenient.

About JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3
A Bluetooth speaker will be ideal for those who mainly play their music from a smartphone. They are affordable and come in varying sizes to meet the application. You can find a speaker small enough to hang on the backpack and large enough for a small party. The connectivity mode will allow almost everyone to play their music through the speaker. Many of them have pairing features to play a stereo sound or to play the same music simultaneously.
Some of the most famous speakers brands, especially the Bluetooth variants, are JBL and UE or Ultimate Ears. These brands are well-known for their compact speakers and pleasant sound qualities. They are probably what we have in mind when you ask for compact speakers because most of their products are ideal for most people. If you bring the speakers outdoors or prefer something manageable size, the JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3 will be two perfect options to consider.
These speakers are about the size of your large water bottle and perfect for home or outdoor use. They are not very loud but should fill a small room like a regular bedroom without issues. The best thing about JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3 is their sound character because they sound natural and open for their size. They provide enough bass and bright tops to accommodate varying music genres. However, playing side by side, they don’t sound the same.
We think the bass is more powerful or forward in Megaboom 3 than from Charge 5. This is great for people who love prominent low-end, but for those who prefer a more natural response, Charge 5 will sound more attractive. As for the features, both JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3 come with all the basic or standard features in Bluetooth speakers, such as built-in playback buttons and pairing functions.
JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3 Build Quality
Their orientation is the first difference between JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3. The Charge 5 is mainly used horizontally while Megaboom is sitting vertically. The speakers are about the same size, but Charge 5 is slightly larger and heavier than Megaboom 3. Build quality is impressive, and it is what we expected from compact Bluetooth speakers because they are often used outdoor. The Charge 5 has a rubber/plastic protector on both sides where its passive radiators are firing; it is like a bumper.
The speaker is rated IP67, which means it can be immersed in water up to a meter for 30 minutes. Similarly, the Megaboom 3 is also IP67 for the same protective features. Another noticeable difference is Megaboom 3 has a tighter fabric cover than Charge 5. We are unsure how it may affect the sealing ability, but this difference makes Megaboom 3 feel sturdier. Both speakers are also featured with built-in buttons to control their playbacks.
JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3 Sound Characters
Now let’s get into the essential part or sound characters. Like how the microphone can make your voice sounds different, the speakers also don’t sound exactly like each other. Small speakers usually don’t sound neutral about the accuracy, but some can get close with a narrow response. Charge 5 is one of them because the response is pretty balanced across the frequency range. It is slightly boosted on the bass area but not as prominent as the Megaboom 3.
The Megaboom 3 is a pretty balance from the low mid to highs, but the bass is more pronounced, and songs playing from this speaker sound more powerful. It can be a good thing or not, depending on your preference. While Megaboom 3 is smaller, this speaker surprisingly has a wider soundstage, making your music sounds more natural. Probably the driver arrangement inside got something to do with the soundstage, but it is much better than Charge 5.
JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3 Features
The next part we want to talk about is their features, which are very similar to each other. First, both use Bluetooth to connect with almost any modern device, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers. What to note is Charge 5 can’t connect to more than one device at a time, while Megaboom 3 can pair with two devices at the same time. Second, we also have a pairing function for both speakers, and you can use two speakers to play stereo sound.
But, we also need to choose the speakers wisely because while Megaboom 3 can pair with any Boom and Megaboom speakers from Ultimate Ears, the JBL Charge 5 uses using PartyBoost feature. This feature is not always present in all JBL speakers because they also have Connect Plus, especially older variants. The PartyBoost is claimed to be an improvement over Connect Plus, especially for the distance coverage, for it now supports 60+ feet area compared to just 30 feet.
As for the number of speakers we can connect with simultaneously, both JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom will support more than 100 speakers, so we think it is not an issue for most of us. Unfortunately, none of these speakers are coming with any smart assistant, so they are not smart speakers, and there is no microphone either, which means we can’t receive calls using these speakers.
JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3 Apps
The purchase doesn’t come with any app, but you can download a smartphone app for these speakers. JBL Portable and Ultimate Ears are the names of the app. They are available on both Google Playstore and App Store. We like their graphic EQ from these apps, which allows you to tailor the sound character to meet a preference. The apps will display battery levels, and we use these apps to pair speakers. Sadly there is no feature for multi-room because they are not designed for home use.
JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3 Battery Life
Lastly, we want to talk about the battery life of JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3. They are compact speakers, so we don’t expect to see them last for long. The JBL Charge 5 will last for 20 hours, but the music is playing at about 50% volume. It will last for 14 hours or shorter if you play it at the max volume in real life. Megaboom 3 surprisingly lasts longer at 17 hours of continuous playback, but it can reach 20 hours too at a lower volume.
JBL Charge 5 vs UE Megaboom 3
Both JBL Charge 5 and UE Megaboom 3 are good speakers, but they are also quite different. The main difference is in sound character because Megaboom is more bass prominent, and it also has a better soundstage which makes the sound big and more natural. Surprisingly, the battery lasts longer than Charge 5 and also charges faster. The features and build quality are the same because they are equally IP67 and have a free app to control your phone speakers.
