Buying a Bluetooth Speaker
Listening to music together with friends is fun, especially if they have the same taste as yours. Smartphone speakers can be handy, but not loud enough for more people to listen together. The solution for this problem is a Bluetooth speaker which connects to your smart device and plays songs directly for everyone. The speaker is usually portable enough for mobile users and rugged for outdoor applications. The wireless connectivity makes your speaker compatible with various devices whether it is yours or your friend’s.

About JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5
There are many good speakers to consider, depending on your preference. We always suggest getting one from a famous brand like JBL and Sony because these are some of the most well-known names with good quality products. Some factors you may need to consider before purchasing a Bluetooth speaker are size and battery life. Sound quality usually varies as it can be a personal preference. Generally, the smaller speakers can’t perform as well or rich as the bigger model due to the driver’s limitation.
JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5 are some of the best options for their portable size and rugged build quality. These speakers are ideal for indoor and outdoor use, as long as you don’t have too many people because the volume won’t cover a party-sized crowd. Still, if your friends have other compatible speakers, these two can be paired with many other JBL speakers to improve the volume. While visually almost identical, the two are not the same even though the sound profile is very similar.
The main difference between JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5 is the battery life which makes the latter a more suitable option if you often bring the speaker to outdoor activities like camping, hiking, etc. Both speakers are convenient and pair well with most Bluetooth-enabled modern devices. You can pair them in no time and play various music from your library or music streaming app. Unfortunately, neither of these speakers can receive a wired connection via cable input. JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5 Design
Another major difference between JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5 is the size because the latter is bigger and heavier. The Charge 5 is almost twice as heavy as the Flip 6, but they adopt the same design with a slight difference. The ideal way to play these speakers is by placing them in horizontal form; the Charge 5 has a flat bottom to prevent it from moving around. Instead of straight sides, the Charge 5 has a slightly curvy shape. Both speakers have the same JBL logo and inclusion, which is a charging cable.
JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5 Sound Quality
The most important part of a speaker is the sound quality which is surprisingly very similar, almost identical to JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5. Like most speakers in this size and price range, you get a relatively flat presentation and good accuracy. Don’t expect to hear a rich low-bass because they can’t offer it. Still, we find both speakers sound pretty good for most music genres. If you are into EDM and Hip-Hop the bass frequency could be more powerful. The sound presentation is also suitable for videos.
The preset sound is already good and versatile, but you can still tweak the sound profile to match yours. JBL offers a companion app suitable for both speakers so you can customize the EQ to fit your preference. However, no matter how you adjust the EQ, it seems the low-bass range can’t be as rich as in some speakers, but having the option is nice.
JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5 Battery Life
The next part we want to talk about is battery life because Bluetooth speakers rely on the battery for long-lasting playback. JBL advertised the Charge 5 to last up to 20 hours while Flip 6 is up to 12 hours which could be true when playing at a relatively low volume. In real life, the actual playback varies depending on the volume and features, but the Charge 5 is still impressive at around 14.5 hours. The Flip 6 runs out of power much faster at approximately 6 hours from a full charge.
We don’t think battery life matters a lot if you primarily use the speaker indoors because you can still play the speakers while connecting the USB power, giving the speakers unlimited playback. We suggest getting an adapter to connect the speaker directly to a wall power as it doesn’t come in the package.
JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5 Features
As for the other features, JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5 have a PartyBoost function which allows you to connect both speakers. There are many other JBL speakers with the PartyBoost function and each model is compatible with one other. Neither of these speakers has a microphone so you can’t receive or make a call through the speaker. The built-in control is pretty standard such as playback for play/pause, volume up/down, and skip to the next track; we can’t skip backward to the previous song.
JBL Flip 6 Vs JBL Charge 5
JBL makes plenty of good portable speakers like the JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5. These speakers are versatile for indoor and outdoor use with an IP67 rating. The main difference will be the size and battery life because the sound quality is not far different and tends to be identical. But, the Charge 5’s battery life is impressive as it can touch 10+ hours of playback if you often bring the speaker for an outdoor activity where power is unavailable. The features are identical and you can use the companion app to tweak the EQ.

The decision is yours because not everyone wants the same speaker. We suggest Flip 6 for indoor use or if you prefer a smaller speaker. But, we recommend getting the Charge 5 because it offers a longer playback so you can enjoy the speaker indoors and outdoors. The long battery life is handy if you often bring the speaker for outdoor applications.
