Bluetooth Speakers

Music has been part of our lives since early, and our taste grows as we get older. However, the listening device is not changing because they are still the same or through transducers like speakers. Speakers in modern days are more convenient to allow their users to install or connect it with various media players. One of the most popular is probably portable Bluetooth speakers. This type of speaker is highly convenient because they work without cable and can be connected to most smartphones.

Bluetooth speakers are not new anymore because they have been around for more than a decade now. Many people were reluctant to use it in the past because the connectivity may harm the audio quality, but just like most technology, it gets better over time. Bluetooth speakers work by establishing wireless connectivity to your media player to receive and send information, including the audio file. It happens in real-time as your music plays, and the main benefit is that we don’t have to fiddle with physical connectivity like cable.

There is usually a built-in rechargeable battery to power the speakers in your device. The battery capacity is crucial for any Bluetooth speaker since it affects playback time or usefulness. We all want speakers with a big battery for prolonged listening sessions, but a bigger battery also means a bigger unit, and not everyone wants large speakers. While most of them work based on the same principle, surprisingly, not all speakers will sound the same because each company has its characteristics.

About JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus

If you love listening to music and want a convenient speaker, Bluetooth speakers will be an ideal option to choose. They are light and typically small enough to fit in a backpack, so portability is not an issue. Depending on the model, usually, the speaker can have 8 hours of continuous playback and enough for most people. However, the sound character and features will vary based on each unit. While not always the case, larger speakers tend to play louder.

For Bluetooth speakers, we always recommend sticking with famous names or well-known brands because they are more likely to offer high-quality products and reliable customer care if you find an issue with the product later. Some of the most famous names you can count on are JBL and Bose, which are no longer strangers in the audio device segment. These companies are well-known for their audio equipment, especially JBL, with extensive Bluetooth speakers in varying sizes.

Bose is also highly praised for their audio products like speakers, and many people love their signature sound, which is usually smoother than or not as prominent as JBL. For those who play their song loud or mostly listening in their home, the JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus are ideal options to consider. These two are mid-size Bluetooth speakers making them perfect for listening with friends. They are still relatively portable and easy to carry if you bring the speaker to the workplace or hangout spots.

In comparison, the JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus are pretty different based on the sound character and their features. Currently, Xtreme 3 is the more expensive choice, but Revolve Plus sounds more refined and smoother if you dislike blaring sound. We also think the Revolve Plus is ideal if you play the speakers at home because it provides more connectivity options and does not limit the device to smartphones or Bluetooth. JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus Design

First, their physical size is the most noticeable difference between JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus. Xtreme 3 is horizontally set up, and the actual dimensions are 11.7 inches long x 5.3 inches wide. The Revolve Plus is vertically set up and has a height of 7.2 inches with a depth of 4 inches. The Bose speaker is designed more for a fixed setup or indoor use because the housing is only IPX4, meaning it is not made to be submerged. On the other hand, Xtreme 3 is IP67 or water and dustproof.

On accessibility, their control buttons are located at the top of the speakers. They are clearly labeled for each function. We notice when you press the middle button on Revolve Plus, it will call for smart assistance, so this speaker may act as a smart speaker as well, a feature that is missing from the Xtreme 3. In Addition, there is a USB port in Revolve Plus, but this is useful for playback and charging, unlike the charging only on Xtreme 3.

JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus Sound Character

Second, for the most important part, let’s talk about the sound character of JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus because they don’t sound like each other. To put it simply, the Revolve Plus sounds smoother and more rounded than Xtreme 3. This speaker is on the soft side, but it also makes it comfortable to listen to without the harsh edge. The bass is not very prominent, and while it is not what people call balance, the speaker is nice for almost any popular genre.

On the other hand, Xtreme 3 is similar to what the JBL signature sounds powerful but also a bit harsh. We think the vocals can be too sharp from this speaker, so it is not as comfortable when playing louder. The bass is more prominent and has an excellent soundstage, yet it is not as natural as the Revolve Plus. Probably the speaker arrangement has something to do with delivery, but the bass is warmer and smoother on the Bose speakers.

JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus Features

Third, for the features side, both JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus use the newest Bluetooth technology that can sustain a connection for about 30 feet or linear distance. This can be more or less in real life, depending on what gets in between the devices. The speakers are water-proof, but Revolve Plus is only rain resistance and not made to be submerged or protected against small particles like dust. What’s very interesting is that you can play audio through a USB cable in this speaker.

This is usually not present in JBL speakers, including Xtreme 3. We find a USB port in this speaker, but it can’t play audio but charge your device instead. It has a USB-A out port, which is also useful for charging your other device, but sadly, we can’t connect a drive or use this port to play a song. Another helpful feature from Revolve Plus is the voice assistant, which adds value to the speaker if you control it using this feature.

JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus Battery Life

Both JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus seem to last for a reasonable amount of time on the battery side. Note that playback time is highly subjective to the volume level, so the battery will also run out faster if you play loudly. Xtreme 3 has a battery indicator, but if you press the power button on Revolve Plus, the speaker will spell the battery level for you; it is a very convenient feature. The claimed battery life is 15 and 16 hours, respectively.

In real life, we play Xtreme 3 at 50% volume, and the speaker lasts for 15 hours or 8 hours when increased to 80% volume. The Revolve Plus is good for 10 hours when playing at 50% volume and much less when increasing the level.

JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus Pairing

Lastly, for the pairing ability, like most Bluetooth speakers, the JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus are coming with a feature to let you pair the speaker with other similar speakers. The Xtreme 3 can be paired with any speakers from JBL that come with Partyboost technology, so you can play two or more speakers together. Revolve Plus can be connected using Bose SympleSync with other Bose smart home families to play together. You can also take a call with Revolve Plus since it has a built-in microphone.

JBL Xtreme 3 Vs Bose Revolve Plus

Both JBL Xtreme 3 and Bose Revolve Plus are good speakers for your entertainment. There are some noticeable differences between the two, but Revolve Plus sounds smoother and has a warmer bass with a better sound stage. It can also play audio from your other device through a USB cable, take calls directly from the speaker, and access the smart assistant. However, its housing is not as sealed as the Xtreme 3.
