Bluetooth Speakers

Anyone who wants to buy a Bluetooth speaker must realize that we have so many different options in the market. Some of them are coming from brands we have never heard of but mostly are familiar enough that you can recall at least one of their most popular models in the last several years. Just like with any device or equipment and product, buying a speaker is highly subjective to the user and how you will want to use them.

Based on the form factor let’s say there are compact and large Bluetooth speakers. The larger speakers are perfect for mass use, parties, or occasions where you want the sound to be loud enough for the listeners to enjoy while the compact one is mostly for personal use. Some of the small speakers are about the size of a smartphone so we can attach them on something such as a backpack or the shower knob when you want to listen to music more privately.

The features on both types of speakers are mostly the same because nowadays speakers are very well-made to be versatile. But, if your application calls for water and dust resistance, it is also wise to find a device that can provide adequate protection. Especially for outdoor use, the speakers have to be very durable and rigid because we never know what will happen out there and it is better to be safe than spending a lot on something we can break easily.

If you are unsure about what the speaker may be useful for, we can just get a good decently sized speaker. This is typically the size that we can still bring conveniently or around the same size of a coffee tumbler and water bottle or slightly larger. This is a very popular size too and the best thing is that they can be loud enough for a small room while still being travel friendly in case you want to bring it outdoors or on an adventure.

For those who are going to use the speaker specifically at home only, do consider a smart speaker instead. Some people may already have this device in their home to integrate with other smart home products installed. They can be used like a Bluetooth speaker too since you can integrate them to a smartphone or streaming app and stream the content directly. Depending on the model, most of them are good enough for casual music listeners. They are very convenient too because you can use voice commands.

About JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2

There are so many good speakers to go for and not all of them may fit in your application or even preference. We do think it is wise to consider what you want from the device and see which of them is more promising. The popular brands are a great start to try, find the ideal choice and personally we also like the more well-known names when shopping, especially for electronics because they have a more credible reputation in terms of product quality and customer service.

Among the companies that make Bluetooth speakers, JBL is not only one of the famous choices but also one of the best options to consider. They are still creating and upgrading their speakers from time to time so you will get a better product for each iteration. It is also wise to follow the improvement in technology because sound quality wise and some features are definitely better. However, due to the price difference, some of us may want to consider more factors when deciding the option.

JBL do have more than plenty of Bluetooth speakers to choose from such as the JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2. These speakers are close brothers and you may already know that there is only a one year gap between the two with Xtreme 3 being launched in November 2020. These speakers are sharing so many similarities and JBL seems to change the design a little bit as well. But, how about the speaker’s sound itself? Unfortunately many do think they are too similar.

Currently the Xtreme 2 is more than $100 cheaper than its newer variant so it is a meaningful difference. With the same sound quality we do think it is wise to spend less because the Xtreme 2 is still a very good speaker and has a good value as well after the Xtreme 3 is launched. There are some differences however, mostly on the design and one of the things that we like is the new speaker becomes lighter so it can be more comfortable to carry around.

JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2 Design

Now let’s see the speaker’s first and while it may not be too noticeable, the JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2 are different in form factor. The Xtreme 3 is a bit larger and the fashion is slightly changed too. We have seen some JBL speakers to have bumper or cushiony surfaces on both edges which is now incorporated to Xtreme 3. The speaker is larger and bulkier than Xtreme 2 but surprisingly about a pound lighter while maintaining the build quality.

Another fashion change is the logo which now becomes bigger and more pronounced; personally we like this new design. They include a strap too when you get any of these speakers and Xtreme 3 strap comes with a slight bump on the surface to prevent it from sliding off your shoulder when used. Similarly, they still integrate a bottle opener on the strap, just for convenience. The other important difference is now Xtreme 3 charges through USB-C and has a smaller adapter too. JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2 Specs

Now for the most important part, let’s see what the JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2 can offer starting from the specs. Just like the predecessor, Xtreme 3 is still coming with two front woofers and two forward firing tweeters, as well as passive radiators that come out of the edges. The main difference here is that the new speaker is rated at 50 watt RMS while the older variant is a 40 watt RMS variant. However, do note that this capacity is achieved when they are plugged in and not when running on battery.

JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2 Sound Quality

But, how do they sound? We do think both JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2 sound very similar to each other. The main difference that we can pick up is that Xtreme 3 seems to be tweaked on the highs to also boost the frequency compared to its older variant. If you have Xtreme 1 for example, both will be more open and have a more natural sound stage in comparison. We also think when played at the same volume Xtreme 3 is a louder speaker.

Not so surprisingly, the bass part of these speakers are pretty much the same so when it combines with the more pronounced highs, the Xtreme 3 sounds a bit lighter in general than Xtreme 2. Of course you can play any music genre and still enjoy them with any of the two because none are made for critical listening but many people seem to prefer the warmer sound character of the Xtreme 2 so if bassy character is what you are aiming, we do think it is a better choice to go.

JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2 Features

Next we also want to talk about the features available on both JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2. If you already have JBL speakers in the past, they will come with a feature to pair with each other. These two come with PartyBoost so you can connect similar speakers in the collection. What we like the most from Xtreme 3 is probably the new charger because Xtreme 2 was using an AC port and now it is USB-C which is more common and you can still find the USB-A too.

These ports are convenient and you can use both to charge other devices too. However, we still don’t get the USB-A to play from flash disk and to use the USB-C to connect a device for wired playback. Besides these differences, you get the same features on both speakers.

JBL Xtreme 3 Vs Xtreme 2

The JBL Xtreme 3 and Xtreme 2 are good speakers to play music at home or outdoors. The main difference is in size and sound because Xtreme 3 is bigger but lighter and while it is more powerful, the sound is more balanced so it may not sound as warm for some people. It is louder and comes with a better charging system. The cable is now more compact and charging through USB-C while keeping the charge out feature and the same IP rating.
