Speakers or Headphone

There are so many music genres out there and we always find new songs to add into our favorite playlist. We can live without music at all but we can’t imagine how bleak those days will be because music did bring colors to our every day’s life from the morning’s traffic, during working hours, and on the way back to our home. Thanks for the invention of the speaker we can make small headset and headphones to bring our music along wherever we go.

Personally we are more into headphones or earphones because they are convenient and have better isolation features as well as versatile for almost any occasions but, for a relaxing time at home, we prefer to use speakers. When it comes to audio quality and a natural sense of openness, speakers will sound more natural and mimic a live performance better. They are also loud so you can jam to any song while moving around or for a prolonged time without fatigue.

Besides the situational difference, between speaker and its little brother headphone or earphone it is more about personal preference. We can have different opinions on which genre is the best or which musical instrument sounds best played solo but at the end of the day, we prefer those which sound best in our ears.

Speaker Frequency Response

Shopping for a speaker can be very tricky because sound is something that can be altered easily by various different factors including from where you listen to them or how we position the unit itself. It is best to shop directly at stores and listen to them first too. While you can find lots of sound samples, the result we heard from our computer or smart device won’t be as accurate. But, if you don’t have time or just want to be convenient, we can shop based on your personal preferences.

Speakers are abundant but they sound different and among those specs that we can use as the basic to decide whether they will sound good or not is frequency response or how loud the speaker will be at different frequencies. Ideally, frequency response for speakers is very flat so the speaker would be at the same level at low frequency as it is in the midst of highs. This is especially useful in production because it ensures people who listen to it to experience the same thing as what you intended them to be.

About Mackie CR4 and CR3

However, the majority of speakers out there are not flat and while this is something who produce and meant their speakers as monitors don’t want to have, for the rest of us who are only using them for music listening sessions, almost any speakers will be useful as long as they are not extremely bad either. Chances are we have different tastes when it comes to how the speaker should sound as well; some may prefer everything to be more balanced while the other may like heavy low end.

Speakers are sold by tons of brands and manufacturers so there will be no shortage in options and supply. Speaker sound quality’s overall is affected by the build and how well the product is made as well hence price usually will reflect well on the unit and user experience. For those who want to keep the budget low, Mackie is a great brand to shop from as they have lots of good entry-level models to meet your personal preference.

This brand is very popular among casual users and this is for good reason as their speakers indeed sound amazing for the price they are offered. Among those popular options Mackie CR4 and CR3 will be two ideal choices if you are going to spend less than $150. As the name suggests, these are close brothers so in terms of sound quality they will also sound very similar to each other and we are sure you can already guess what sets them apart from each other.

The prominent difference between Mackie CR4 and CR3 is their driver size which will affect the sound reproduction as well. However, the difference probably is not going to be night and day and in our opinion, both of them are equally good. They are overall great for casual users and while they are called monitors, we don’t think they are ideal in production applications as they are not flat enough to give the exact same sound as what you intended to be.

Mackie CR4 and CR3 Design

These speakers may look big on picture but they are very compact actually and will sit nicely beside your monitor as well if you plan to use them with computer setup or for gaming purposes. Due to the green circle around its driver and volume knob these speakers look like that certain gaming peripheral aesthetic and if you have their products tool, any of these speakers will complement the appearance very well. The CR4 however, is bigger in comparison to CR3.

The little brother is measured at 208 mm tall, 140 mm wide, and 155 deep compared to the CR4 at 224 mm tall, 156 mm wide, and 185 mm deep. Beside sizes they are exactly the same to each other and we like how they keep the face plate as simple as possible too but still putting necessary functions easy to reach including the volume knob and aux port. Flipping them over the rear ports are all the same and similarly, they are made with reflex ports.

Mackie CR4 and CR3 Specification

The first thing you may want to know about speakers is their sound quality but it is better to listen to them directly to be sure whether they sound good in your ears or not. As the name suggests, the prominent difference between Mackie CR4 and CR3 is their driver size because the little brother only has the 3-inch polypropylene-coated woofer instead of 4-inch one. The tweeter however, is the same 0.75-inch Ferro fluid-cooled silk-some which is smaller if you compare it to another similar favorite like Eris E3.5.

If you prefer to have a speaker that stands out on the higher end, do check our Presonus Eris E3 5 Vs Mackie CR4. Due to the difference in driver size another thing that sets these two apart is on the frequency range itself because CR4 is capable of reaching further from 70 Hz instead of 80 Hz but the higher frequency range is still the same at 20kHz. What’s lacking in our opinion is acoustic adjustment which is strange for speakers marketed as monitors to not have.

Mackie CR4 and CR3 Performance

Moving further, let’s see how Mackie CR4 and CR3 perform and how the sound compared to each other. Starting with CR3 this speaker is already very good and we are sure most people will like how bright its high end is as it feels airy and light. The lower end was quite apparent despite the 3-inch driver but if you are someone who is often listening to huge woofers and looking for that “thump” then it is not something we can find here.

On the other hand the CR4 is probably more balanced as a speaker and this one also sounds more refined or smoother but you will notice it prominently on the lower end yet the difference is not like night and day as well. What’s a bit concerning is when you push these speakers to the highest volume because the deep bass part will induce audible turbulence around the port opening which means the design itself is not very amazing.

Mackie CR4 and CR3 Features

If you fancy speakers with lots of features or have additional capabilities, we don’t think you will like these two because there is nothing on this side. They do however, have a decent amount of ports to connect with your media source from the audio inputs through balanced TRS and unbalanced RCA or using Aux mini jack and phone socket when you want to wear headphones. In the box there are 1/8-inch stereo RCA cable and 1/8-inch cable for smart phone or media player like iPod.

Mackie CR4 vs CR3

Both of these models are amazing for your casual music listening session and also ideal to be paired with your computer as well. What makes them different is mainly on the size of the woofer which makes CR4 sounds deeper in comparison to CR3 and slightly more balanced as well but at the high end they are pretty much the same to each other. The difference is not night and day but you can still notice it side by side.
