Studio Monitors

The invention of the speaker and how we find a way to store sound for playback are both very important to the development of lots of devices and tools today. Speakers especially are everywhere you go and carry around within your smartphone, laptops, tablets, smartwatch, etc. as well as a crucial part of many systems today. For general purpose, any speaker will do but, how about those who are planning to use the speaker in production since it needs to be much better.

Speakers for this purpose are called studio monitors and as the name suggests, it is used for monitoring the audio being produced. In this application our ears are the guide to decide what adjustments to make such as which frequencies to boost and which to roll off. Since they are delivered through the speaker, it needs to be as accurate as possible so then we can create the mix just like we want it to be. If the speakers add coloration, the result won’t be accurate.

In general, studio monitors are designed to create audio signals that are as flat as possible across the audible frequency spectrum. On the other hand, the regular consumer speakers are often tweaked to suit the taste of its users which more often than not have stronger bass response to give those satisfying punches. A good studio monitor will not sound as satisfying in this term since they are not emphasizing particular frequencies over the others hence, they will sound more accurate and consistent across volume levels.

Passive and Active Monitors

Studio monitors however, just like regular speakers are available in an almost infinite options which some of them are probably better for you. One of them is between active and passive monitors because while the industry itself grew up with passive monitors, the amount of beginner and new enthusiasts who are using active monitors seems to outgrow the older tradition. One is not completely better than the other but the best thing about passive monitors is the modular character itself.

Since you will need to combine the speaker with an appropriate amplifier, it lets users gradually upgrade their rig while also making it cheaper in the process, as we can move slowly based on your own budget. Active speakers on the other hand have built in amplifiers already which makes them extremely convenient and easy to use as well as to transport but, we have to replace the whole unit when upgrading as they are an inseparable set and depending on the model, they can be quite expensive too.

About Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5

Studio monitors are widely available and you can always find one from any major speaker brands out there. Speaker’s quality is decided by the material and component they are made from hence expensive models are usually much better than its affordable versions yet, if you can spare some time and browsing through the entry-level products, there are actually lots of good monitors to choose from without costing you an arm and leg but, we may also still have to scarify some whether it is on the sound or build quality itself.

Personally we prefer to stick with popular names because they are more reliable when it comes to product’s quality and for affordable studio monitors, two great companies to shop from are Mackie and Presonus. We are sure most people are familiar with these brands because they are everywhere and also among those we often see recommended due to their reliability. While they do carry professional level models, worry not for the affordable range are very friendly for the pocket.

For those who will invest more on the monitor but still want to keep the budget low, Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5 are ideal options you will love. These two are often being the options for low-budget studio monitors but there are lots of us who are using them for casual listening purposes as well including for users who want to complete their gaming setup with a good pair of speakers. In our opinion their versatility is what makes them very attractive in the first place.

The Mackie CR4 is a top option for users who love stronger low end usually but it doesn’t mean it has strong coloration yet, they do more prominent in this frequency compared to similar monitors even with the little brother of Eris, the E3 5 that you can check in our Presonus Eris E3 5 Vs Mackie CR4. We guessed the sound character of Eris 4.5 is not far different from its little brother but in general, between the two many will probably like Eris better if this speaker is meant for production.

Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5 Design

From the external point of view both Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5 are very similar in terms of build quality and they are equally made from MDF just like most speakers out there but these two do have slightly different details in fashion. Mackie CR series is famous with this green list that circles its drivers which gives this subtle yet interesting take out from the aesthetic. Its gleaming green may not be everyone’s taste but personally we have no problem with it.

Eris is simpler in comparison, and does have serious looks in a glance. Since Eris also has a bigger driver, side by side it will also be slightly taller and deeper than Mackie CR4 but the width itself is pretty much the same to each other. To make application convenient, their volume knob and ports are all placed at the front while all connectivity are placed on their rear panel.

Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5 Specification

Moving further, let’s see what Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5 can offer and starting with their drivers, as the name suggest, the CR4 has a 4-inch polypropylene-coated woofer combines with a 0.75-inch ferrofluid-cooled silk-dome tweeter while on the other hand Eris has 4.5-inch Kevlar low-frequency driver which is paired with a one inch silk-dome tweeter with a protective grille. Similarly, both of them are also driven by a Class AB amplifier which means one of them is active and the other is passive.

As for the frequency response CR4 is from 70 Hz to 20 kHz and this is also the same for Eris 4.5 while both sets of speakers are rated to give you a total of 50 watts of power so we do think they can fill a medium room or standard size bedroom really well.

Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5 Sound Quality

Now for the sound quality, both Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5 are amazing and in general we are sure most people will like any of these speakers. Side by side, they are not identical to each other however and you can notice it right away. Mackie sounds more controlled and tighter as well especially on the low-frequency area which makes it appear to have boosted bass and satisfying if your type of songs are stronger in this area too.

On the other hand Eris is more airy, it feels light and probably clearer while having a wider imagining as well. The higher frequency is very pleasing in this speaker because we can feel finer details better for example if you are listening to a classic piece the thin sound of layered instruments are still presented well and not overpowered by the rest of the front instruments.

Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5 Feature

On the additional features, since Mackie CR4 and Presonus Eris 4.5 are not the BT version, none of them have the wireless capabilities yet, Eris does have this acoustic tuning feature that you can check on the rear panel. This section includes a high and mid frequency controls with low cutoff switch to provide boost or to cut at all frequencies above 4.5kHz within the range of ±6dB while the mid control works at frequencies centered on 1kHz to extend an octave above and below the frequency.

Mackie CR4 vs Presonus Eris 4.5

These affordable speakers are amazing for the budget and overall they are great for both production and casual application but, they are also different in terms of sound character because while Mackie has tighter low-frequency and feels more satisfying for those songs with prominent bass, it is less open and less airy from the middle to top which makes Eris has better performance when it comes to giving you best details.
