MXL 990 Vs AT2020

MXL 990, as the cheaper option between the two, is a condenser microphone with cardioid polar pattern, which means that it is good for rejecting noise from the rear side. It basically does not come with any pop filter, so it may not be perfect for close-up usages. MXL 990 features a FET preamp with balanced input and a large 6 micron gold-sputtered diaphragm in order to deliver professional sound quality. Its frequency response is 30 Hz – 20 kHz.

Meanwhile, AT2020 is also a cardioid condenser polar pattern. However, though it also does not have a built-in pop filter, it can be bought in a bundle together with the external pop filter. That is a great option if you plan to use your mic for close-up speeches or vocals. AT2020 has a wider frequency response range than MXL 990 with 20 – 20,000 Hz. Obviously, you can handle low-frequency sounds better here. Also, it has higher SPL and lighter weight.

Now that we know AT2020 can be purchased together with a pop filter, has better frequency response range, higher SPL, and more lightweight, we can say that AT2020 is the better choice over MXL 990. Nonetheless, MXL 990 is still a decent alternative if you are limited on budget.
