Bassy Speakers

Almost everyone loves music and it is not surprising because they are fun to listen to. There are plenty of methods to deliver your favorite song but all of them involve a transducer in the form of a speaker regardless of the size. In general the best speakers are those that can recreate or deliver the sound as accurate as you designed it to be. Who knows whether it is accurate or not? Probably only the composer or musician who records the music.

For the majority of people any speaker will do but some people do prefer something that matches their preference the most. Speakers don’t always sound the same and it is due to the design or anything that made up the unit. You can easily shop for them based on the level of volume because the larger the drive, the louder they can get. In most cases we usually choose something that is more concealing because loud noise may annoy the people around you.

A common sound character that seems still very popular today is bassy speakers or those boosted on the low-end. It is apparent that most people love deep bass and are also more sensitive to tonal changes and rhythm detection of sound in that frequency band. There is a study made by McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind that found listeners are more tuned to pick up deep bass compared to other tones. As you may know, many or probably most music compositions have low notes rhythm and higher tones for melody.

The reason for this is that we listen to music with both body and the ear and most of our body parts including the bones and cartilages resonate at lower frequencies thus, it transmits the music to the auditory cortex of our brain faster compared to how it transmits from the ears. To put it simply, the music is felt by the brain when it is at a lower frequency while the tones are heard and broken down as well as processed at a much slower rate.

Of course this is just something that is common and we are sure not everyone will have the same opinion or taste in music and sound character itself. Some of us do prefer something that is more accurate or balanced throughout the frequency range so we can listen to the song as it is rather than colored based on the speaker design. Thankfully companies can make a wide range of products to fit in these different preferences.

About Sony XB33 and XB23

When it comes to listening devices, there are plenty of options to choose from and you can buy based on what you want to aim for. In case you prefer something that is more accurate or true to the mix, it is probably best to get a studio monitor since they are usually more accurate and neutral. On the other hand if you like something that is more prominent on the treble or bass, we can choose from a lot of options and a wide range of sizes.

Bluetooth speakers probably fit best in modern days because they are wireless meaning we can connect them with almost anything that comes with the connectivity. Sony for example is carrying not only a huge collection of electronic devices but also audio equipment. From PlayStation to compact Bluetooth speaker, this brand is trusted with the product quality and their competitive price range. Just like most companies too, they continuously renew and improve their products to become better and more satisfying for the consumers.

When you look into the collection, Sony is carrying quite a lot such as the Xtra Bass line or XB line. This family contains Bluetooth speakers at varying sizes and as the name suggests, they will be a perfect choice for listeners who love bassy speakers or those boosted on the low-end. Sony XB33 and XB23 are some of the most versatile options and being close brothers or siblings the two are very similar, almost identical to each other especially on the sound character.

However, just like a big brother and its little brother, the XB33 is a bigger speaker and Sony also claimed that it is designed better or a higher model of the XB23. The main difference seems to be on the speaker itself based on how they are constructed and sound when playing your favorite music. In comparison between Sony XB33 and XB23, the former is going to sound louder, perfect for parties yet it is significantly more expensive and features are kind of similar to the XB23.

Sony XB33 and XB23 Design

The most noticeable difference between Sony XB33 and XB23 is their size because XB23 is significantly smaller at 76mm x 216mm while its brother is larger at 246mm x 97mm x 106mm. The speakers can be used standing up vertically or laying down depending on which seems to match your preference and style but for XB33 we like it laying horizontally due to the size. Material wise they are identical and as you expected, the body is sealed with an IP67 rating.

As Bluetooth speakers there is nothing else coming with these speakers but the USB charging cable and from the design, they are identical. The XB23 is cylindrical like many other wireless speakers but the XB33 is rectangular with rounded edges. There are some physical buttons located at the surface and also ports on the rear of the speakers for charging and connecting your device. The two come with standard USB cable we use for charging the smartphone but there is no wall adapter included. Read also: Sony XB33 Vs Marshall Emberton here.

Sony XB33 and XB23 Sound Quality

Now for the most important part, let’s see what the Sony XB33 and XB23 can offer starting from the sound quality and difference. From the technical perspective, these two are coming with passive radiators on both sides and also use dual frontward transducers. In comparison the sound character is actually very similar to each other but also different, probably due to the construction and perhaps the driver size. When firing them in full volume, we notice XB33 has a wider soundstage.

They are very fun to listen to and can play quite loud for more people to listen to together. Since XB23 is smaller, somehow the low end is not as powerful or impactful as the XB33. The audio may sound thinner if you listen to it side by side. It is very noticeable when playing songs with prominent bass and there is a lack of depth and kick it can produce. In general we do think XB23 is emphasized on the mid and highs while XB33 is more bass prominent.

Sony XB33 and XB23 Features

Next we want to talk about the additional features that you can find on the Sony XB33 and XB23. First is their lighting and yes, only the XB33 comes with this feature along with the XB43 which is the higher model. The lighting is not fixed as well since you can change the mode from your app. Second, they can be paired with each other or similar speakers in the collection to play louder and more fun with friends or family you have around.

Third there are two listening modes, one is Stamina mode and the other one is Extra Bass with Stamina being a flatter one, perfect for speech or movie night while the Extra Bass mode is perfect for music listening, especially if you love bass heavy music.

Sony XB33 and XB23 Battery Life

Last but not least we want to talk about the battery life of Sony XB33 and XB23 because they are not the same as well. In paper, these speakers are claimed to last as up to 14 and 10 hours respectively when used in Extra Bass mode and 50% volume. In real life at maximum volume the XB33 will last for about 3 and half an hour while for the XB23 the max volume will only make it last for around 2 and half an hour.

Sony XB33 Vs XB23

Both speakers are amazing and you can get any of the two based on which seems to match the preference. The differences are quite a lot from the size, sound, and also battery life. In general XB33 is more expensive, sounds better on the low end, and has this lightning aesthetic. It is also more ideal for a relatively fixed setup because the speaker is heavier based on the typical Bluetooth models from similar brands.
