Bluetooth speakers are very popular and the reason is because they are fun to use while being convenient too. There are plenty of options and Ultimate Ears are among the best as well as stylish options to go for, such as their UE Boom 2 Vs Boom 3. These close siblings may sound very similar but they are quite different so before deciding the option, let’s take a look at what they can offer here.
In this comparison, we are going to talk about:

Regardless of how you want to listen to a song for example, we will always need a speaker, or at least a type of speaker that converts the electrical signal into sound waves our ears can hear. There are so many designs and sizes when it comes to speakers and the basic feature is the larger the driver the louder as well they can deliver the sound. For many of us loudness is not an issue but how the speaker sounds and how convenient it is to accompany your day.
In modern days many of us are choosing a TWS or headphone instead because they are the most convenient but speakers are fun to listen to with more people sharing the experience. The best thing about a larger speaker is that we can enjoy it together and if the sound or volume is not going to disturb other people near you, it is also the most comfortable way to listen to music since our head is free from any weight and any pressure.
When it comes to the speaker, do consider where you want to use or listen to it. Large speakers are great for home use like in your entertainment room while smaller speakers such as Harman Kardon Onyx 5 Vs JBL Xtreme 2 will be ideal for a small room or small amount of people listening together. It is ideal if you have a room with few coworkers who like the same type of music and we personally often use it as well just to kill time and improve the atmosphere in the room.
If you will bring this speaker out of the house, the models with battery and wireless connectivity will be the most ideal. Bluetooth speakers have been around for quite some time and it is great to have one if you are often bringing it out of the house or don’t want to deal with the cable. For Bluetooth speakers, besides the sound quality, the battery capacity and also Bluetooth connectivity are important to make sure the equipment is reliable and also fun to use.
They will have a varying sound character just like typical speakers but you can always go for the best according to your own taste. The best speakers are those that you find pleasant to listen to and for the additional features, most Bluetooth speakers nowadays, especially those coming from named brands are coming with an ability to be paired with other similar speakers to play stereo sound or to play with your friends with the same speaker so they can play louder.

About UE Boom 2 and Boom 3
There are more than plenty of amazing speakers to choose from and they can go from high-end expensive choices to budget options that you don’t have to think twice to spend on. Do consider the quality however since cheap alternatives often not only sound bad but also less durable, especially if you will bring the speakers often or play it outdoors. We do think popular options are the best and avoid buying cheap alternatives that may not last for long.
Bluetooth speakers are more affordable today as the newer models are entering the market. Brands like Ultimate Ears for example are one of the best when it comes to Bluetooth speakers as they are good sounding and look very cool too. We would be lying if saying appearance is not a factor when buying something because it certainly is and one of the biggest selling points of UE is the styling, especially their large volume buttons which gives the speakers a distinct appearance.
If you want a speaker that both sounds good and looks good, the UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 are two interesting options to go for. They have been around for quite some time with Boom 2 launched in 2015 and Boom 3, three years after. The close siblings are sharing so many similarities but also differences and the most noticeable will be their design or look. Some actually dislike the Boom 3 since it is more common like most Bluetooth speakers.
In comparison between the UE Boom 2 and Boom 3, the latter is actually cheaper so it is quite confusing since usually the recent releases are going to be more expensive yet when first launched Boom 3 was about $50 cheaper than Boom 2. There are also some improvements on the inside that makes Boom 3 an overall better choice if you want to look for an UE speaker at sub $200 with satisfying sound and also convenience.
UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 Design
From the design alone both UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 are already quite different and side by side the Boom 3 is larger too or about 15% larger than the previous model. They still have the same material but they improve the sealing, now making Boom 3 IP67 instead of IPX7 which means it has protection for small particles like dust too. When you tossed the speaker on water, the Boom 3 also floats while Boom 2 will submerge.
The overall styling is a bit different with now Boom 3 no longer having the panel where the volume buttons are at; it is now just the volume button, making the speaker cleaner but also more “generic” in terms of appearance. Personally we have no issue about how it looks but if you have a specific preference, it is good to follow which please you the most. Both UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 are battery powered, have a charging port and come with the standard USB cable for charging.
UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 Sound Quality
For most of us, any speaker will sound good but some may have preferences such as whether you want the bass to be very strong or prefer something that is more balanced. In comparison between UE Boom 2 and Boom 3, they have similar sound profiles yet not exactly identical. Played side by side, the Boom 3 seems to have improved on the bass range so it is now more powerful without overpowering the rest of the frequency. Like most Bluetooth speakers, the two are bass boosted.
But the Boom 3 is giving more oomph into this frequency range to make it more satisfying. The Boom 2 is far from bad and we do think the difference may not be that prominent so if sound is the most important to you, any of the two will do amazing. What we like the most from these speakers is their software companion because not many come with one and this app can be used to tweak the sound further to achieve the type of character you like the most.
UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 Features
Next for the features part, as it has been mentioned above that both UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 are waterproof meaning we can play them near water or even bring them to your pool party and don’t have to worry about damaging the internal components. While the build quality of these two are equally rigid, the Boom 3 is now sealed better, making it more durable or ideal if you want to bring it to outdoor activities like camping.
What’s a bit unfortunate is that they removed the aux port from Boom 3 so now we have no option to pair the speaker with a media player physically and have to rely on Bluetooth all the time. They do put a charging dock compatibility however for the new speaker. Additionally the Boom 3 also has a button at the top for skip and play or pause which is also possible on the older speaker but at least now it is an actual button to press.
UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 Battery Life
Lastly for the battery, do note that it will vary based on at least the volume we are playing them on. The UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 are claimed to last for up to 15 hours on normal use but on testing the average life is going to be about 13-14 hours. They are not the most long lasting speakers in the market but we do think this is plenty enough for typical application or you can just plug the cable while playing at home to avoid draining the battery.
UE Boom 2 Vs Boom 3
There are plenty of good speakers to try and these two are some of the most promising options yet, the difference between UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 are quite a lot. From the sound quality Boom 3 is slightly more satisfying especially on the bass area as it gives more kick into it but battery life wise they are almost identical. The build quality is better on Boom 3 since it is now IP67, both floating and dust resistance.

There is no bad option between the UE Boom 2 and Boom 3 but since Boom 3 is more affordable now and in general a better choice, we do think there is no reason to not opt for it unless you really like the styling and size of Boom 3 or want the aux port.
