VOX is one renowned brand of musical equipment products. VOX models are generally well-received for their superior performance. So, if you are now looking for a reliable and budget-friendly combo amp, you can put VOX AC4 and VOX AC10 into your consideration. These two models are two most affordable choices from the VOX AC series. Of course, VOX AC4 is the one that is more affordable whereas VOX AC10 is a step more expensive. So, which one should you choose?
VOX AC4 makes an attractive choice due to the incredibly portable nature. Compared to VOX AC10, VOX AC4 is much more compact and lightweight. You should be able to lift the 19.84 lbs body effortlessly wherever you go. This way, it can be an excellent solution if you need a mobile combo amp. VOX AC4 is powered by one 12AX7 preamp tube and two EL84 power tubes, and is paired with a 10” Celestion VX10 custom speaker. The model is available in a rich blue vinyl finish with the domino-style Tygon cloth grille, but there is also a white-and-brown model. The Classic Limited Edition variant comes with a 12” speaker and color variants of black and green.
On the other hand, VOX AC10 is quite bigger and heavier at 27.12 lbs, but it still allows for relatively easy portability. The model is armed with two 12AX7 and two EL84 tubes, as well as the 10” Celestion VX10 speaker. It comes with a black body and a brown grille.
Features and Performance
VOX AC4 comes with 4 Watts RMS total output power. You can select one of the three output levels of 4W, 1W, and 1/4W so that you can get the true tonal qualities at different volume levels. On the top side, you can see the control panel which features gain, bass, treble, and master volume settings. The audio quality of VOX AC4 is decent. It has that distinctive British top-end tone. However, the power is indeed not very strong. The sound can be too clean at low volume levels.
On the other hand, VOX AC10 offers a built-in digital reverb, which sounds fine. There are dedicated controls for gain, bass, treble, reverb, and volume. With 10 Watts RMS output power, VOX AC10 can be very versatile. It can work with low volume levels for practicing at home, but it can also be quite loud when needed. The audio reproduction is rich and articulate. The sounds are projected more fully and accurately.
